Re 'the marches', I'm holding the 'Punk Commute' protest ride next Friday 20th May starting at Sydney Town Hall to thank our Lord Mayor, Clover, and then proceeding to Parliament House in Macquarie Street on our bicycles, naturally utilising Clover's lovely cycleways!!!! No politician has agree to meet us despite endless requests from me - hopefully the media may attend (?????) and maybe even a few police too (!!!!!) - come, Mark!!!! xxFreedom Cyclisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11187400454555241935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-56625542575693714982011-05-11T14:00:35.325+01:002011-05-11T14:00:35.325+01:00Hi David, you're more than welcome to use the ...Hi David, you're more than welcome to use the photos in that manner. I've read that Cycle Chat column, and, to be frank had a number of head banging moments. That there are some cycle campaigners who believe it will be easier and more desirable to impose a 20mph limit on dual carriageways than to build proper good quality cycling infrastructure on the same roads is entirely beyond me.

I have great faith in the British public; I believe most are capable and happy to potter around their local streets and on quieter shared roads. But in order to make any number of useful journeys they know that they have to get from A to B using busy main roads. To expect everyone to do this (the sorts of people you see on the photo above) is laughable and most people will not do this and for good reason; it is a deeply hostile and unpleasant environment in which to cycle. Until we get over this obstacle there will be no mass cycling in this country.

Segregation, where appropriate, is so painfully necessary that it would seem some cyclists can't see for looking!ibikelondonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06978714126105951294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-22072763918099033782011-05-11T13:11:46.236+01:002011-05-11T13:11:46.236+01:00if you want to see a circular discussion on why ig...if you want to see a circular discussion on why ignoring Denmark and the Netherlands is the right thing to do to promote cycling then a look at this:

http://www.cyclechat.net/topic/82940-cyclecraft-is-destroying-uk-cycling/

I linked to some of your photos, hope thats ok?Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09273859403782738268noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-79414377911060228472011-05-10T16:55:02.888+01:002011-05-10T16:55:02.888+01:00And hardly a helmet in site! And hardly a helmet in site!Martinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-12803673682459763972011-05-09T09:53:46.394+01:002011-05-09T09:53:46.394+01:00Hi Andrew,

I remember a petition a few years ago aimed at women which was signed by 1000s and 1000s asking for safe cycling infrastructure. It became so popular that it was promptly dropped by the organisation who had fielded it because it would wed them to asking for the sort of stuff I'm talking about above.

I don't think cycling in London is crap, per se, I just think it could be much much much better, which is my motivation on this blog (have a look around)

With regards actually getting a protest out on the streets, no one man is a march, but I do agree about the need for it. Have a look at my earlier blog post about the Civil Rights Movement and cycling which will hopefully give you some inspiration;

http://ibikelondon.blogspot.com/2011/03/bike-pride-or-what-gay-rights-movement.html

If this post about Copenhagen in turn helps to get people fired up then so be it!

All the best,

Markibikelondonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06978714126105951294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-90858064147002810152011-05-09T09:45:57.992+01:002011-05-09T09:45:57.992+01:00Hmmm stuff like this frustrates me. Copenhagen has amazing cycling infrastructure because people in Denmark asked for it.

Yes, lots of bloggers are happy to blog about how crap cycling is in London (not a criticism btw), but I'm yet to see a single one actually protest. Where are the marches? Where's the direct action?

Until we start getting our hands dirty, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Sorry.

P.s. i'm planning one, and really wrote this to drum up some support.

@AndrewTobertAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-54421838530005394622011-05-09T09:39:34.559+01:002011-05-09T09:39:34.559+01:00Hello Michael, sorry for causing the homesickness ...Hello Michael, sorry for causing the homesickness - your home capital was certainly an inspiring and indeed beautiful place to visit!

I also love cycling in London (see the rest of the blog), but I do so despite the prevalent road conditions, not because of them. I love that it's the best way to get around town, but I just wish we had a system that convinced enough other people to think the same.

Cool that I caught a Danish MP on camera, it's good to know they're out there on the bike tracks with the people!ibikelondonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06978714126105951294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-61331745008176825322011-05-09T09:01:15.478+01:002011-05-09T09:01:15.478+01:00Dane living in London here - you just made me feel...Dane living in London here - you just made me feel homesick!

Nice writeup and although the cycling is more challenging and "dealing with traffic"-adrenaline-inducing I still love cycling in London and exploring the city on two wheels.

I think you actually caught an MP on a bike in one of your pictures. Kamal Qureshi from the Socialist People's Party looks very much like the guy squinting at the sun in IMG_8359.Michael Carøe Andersenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09539447126327623536noreply@blogger.com
