Whist road engineers like Ranty, and Jess rightly say they are being put into a very tricky situation by the system, I think it is fair for us as citizens to criticise the whole set up of TfL.
I work as a lighting designer, and some of the stuff we do is dangerous; working at height and with electricity (at the same time!) I have a responsibility to ensure that both the public, and my staff are kept safe. Legislation has made it clear that cost and time are not reasonable excuses for endangering people. In fact there are no excuses or mitigating factors for doing so.
I wonder are road engineers unique in the UK for being able to design without having safety of users as the number one factor in their designs? Engineers and designers have made it clear that 'network assurance' is actually given higher priority than safety. I for one think that is utterly unacceptable in our society.

Here is text from a supposedly enlightened council:

Camden Council and Transport for London are committed to providing high quality cycling facilities in Camden Town. As part of the design
work a west to east cycle route from Mornington Crescent/Hampstead Road to Crowndale Road was explored. It was found this would require additional traffic signals and for all traffic to be stopped for a short period to allow cyclists to progress safely through the junction. The traffic impact of these changes was assessed and led to unacceptable delays to buses and general traffic.

No more.Jonohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04249766610859816646noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-17952289845157167342013-10-18T16:16:05.054+01:002013-10-18T16:16:05.054+01:00Meanwhile this week at Tottenham Hale Gyratory the...Meanwhile this week at Tottenham Hale Gyratory the last of a segregated cycle path is being ripped up by TfL
Amazing isn't itAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-56801822195062533632013-10-18T15:59:44.541+01:002013-10-18T15:59:44.541+01:00Can I suggest you to shorten your share links. They made a choice to kill somebody. Surely that is at the very least Corporate Manslaughter.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-26864909269033820242013-10-18T14:58:00.551+01:002013-10-18T14:58:00.551+01:00This post has made me sad and angry in equal measu...This post has made me sad and angry in equal measure. Seeing the faces of people who died in preventable incidents is heartbreaking - lives taken, families torn apart. But ultimately the reason is: "separated lanes and toucan crossings for cyclists at Bow were discounted by TfL because they would cause delays to motorised traffic deemed to be unacceptable." These deaths are unacceptable. This can't, mustn't go on.Chrishttp://twitter.com/justacwabnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-78833090494866654162013-10-18T11:54:28.255+01:002013-10-18T11:54:28.255+01:00So sadSo sadFreedom Cyclisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11187400454555241935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7129037502516609710.post-60546143984352291102013-10-18T11:37:47.527+01:002013-10-18T11:37:47.527+01:00‘Try to think of something that hasn’t been though...‘Try to think of something that hasn’t been thought before.’

Except that the Dutch ALREADY HAVE thought of it, years ago. There really is no need to reinvent the wheel, just copy the whole thing, the entire dutch system, including their superior design for car roads as well as bike lanes.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
