Part of Cycle Superhighway 7 was closed off at the weekend. Not to facilitate roadworks, or to install more off-peak parking...

This time CS7 - and the rest of Southwark Bridge - was taken over by food lovers, producers and families as part of the Thames River Festival for the annual 'feast on the bridge'. I love the idea, for one weekend a year at least, that such a prime bit of central London road space is given over to feasting and family fun to the detriment of traffic, and people can loiter a while and actually enjoy the view and savour a part of the city that's usually a primary vehicle corridor. Indeed, I like it so much that - just like the SkyRide - they should do it much more often than just once a year. Who wants to watch traffic all day when you could be apple bobbing, making corn dollies, patting cows and drinking cider instead?!
What's this all got to do with bikes I hear you ask? (Other than reclaiming public space and all that..) Well, one bike did make it across the cycle superhighway and up on the bridge. A local honey producer brought his beehive on a cargo bike. Bees, on a bike! Imagine the effect that would have on itinerant black cab drivers...
Who knows, maybe it will catch on?
