Learning from the world's cycling citiies - it's Street Talks with John Dales: Thursday night!

It's been another exciting year of excellent Sreet Talks from the Movement for Liveable London, covering everything from 20mph masterclasses, to learning from London's most permeable boroughs.  Astonishingly, Liveable London will turn 3 years old in March, but first up is the last Street Talk of 2013, and it's on Thursday night.

John Dales, director at street design and spatial planning specialists Urban Movement, has been given a unique task by Transport for London; to find the best cycling infrastructure from around the world, and see how it could be relevant to London's needs.  His study has looked at cyclists and how they get around in the cities of Berlin, Dublin, Malmo, Minneapolis, Munich, Nantes, New York, Seville, Stockholm and Utrecht.  The findings will help to form thinking about how best to deliver the Mayor's nearly £1billion 10 year cycling plan, how to build "quietways" and how to construct separated cycle routes across London.

On Thursday night John will deliver his study and consider the lessons for London and the UK.  For many years now campaigners have been saying "learn from the best examples around the world", and this study will help to formalise that process.  But can London really learn from Germany?  And does what happens on the streets in New York bear relevance to our own city's roads?

December's Street Talks is at the newest premises of popular bicycle cafe Look Mum No Hands!, in Hackney (125–127 Mare St, E8 3RH (Map) on 5/12/13.  Kicking off at 7PM, LMNH will be open beforehand for food, drink and networking.

Street Talks returns in the new year with not one but TWO very special events; on January 22nd Sustrans will present "The quick, the cheap and the temporary: Speeding up the transformation of London’s streets and public spaces" at The Gallery on Cowcross Street, whilst the following evening expert Danish urbanist Jan Gehl will in person present a screening of his film about how our cities are built and work "The Human Scale" at the beautiful Hackney Empire (tickets on sale here)

You can follow tomorrow night's Street Talks live online by following the #streettalks hashtag, and listen again to all previous presentations on the Liveable London website here.  Stay up to date with future events by joining the Liveable London mailing list or finding them on Facebook.
